Prevention Tips

To minimize the chances of your child becoming a victim:

  • — Keep the computer in a common room in your house, so the computer screen is visible to other members of the household.
  • — Talk to your child about the risks of being online.
  • — Have your child show you their favorite online websites and spend time with your child online.
  • — Use blocking software and parental controls.
  • — Randomly check your child's email.

Online predators often meet potential victims in chat rooms and continue to communicate with them through email and instant messaging.

If you suspect your child is a potential victim or has been a victim of online exploitation, contact your local or state law enforcement agency, the FBI, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
