John Marshall
Secretary of State, 
Term of Appointment: 05/13/1800 to 02/04/1801

  • Born near Germantown, in what became Fauquier County, Virginia, September 24, 1755;
  • Privately educated;
  • Served as an officer in the Revolution;
  • Studied law at the College of William and Mary,
  • Admitted to the bar in 1780, and began practice;
  • Member of the Virginia Assembly 1782-1791 and 1795-1797;
  • Member of the State Executive Council 1782-1784;
  • Married Mary Willis Ambler in 1783;
  • Member of the Virginia convention of 1788 that ratified the Federal Constitution;
  • One of the "X Y Z" mission of 1797-1798 to adjust differences with France;
  • Representative from Virginia 1799-1800;
  • Commissioned Secretary of State in President Adams' Cabinet May 13, 1800, entered upon his duties June 6, 1800, and served until February 4, 1801;
  • As Secretary of State, directed the negotiation of the reconciliation convention of 1800 with France;
  • Commissioned Chief Justice of the United States January 31, 1801, and took office February 4, 1801;
  • Continued as Secretary of State ad interim February 4-March 4, 1801;
  • Member of the Virginia constitutional convention of 1829:;
  • Author of a five-volume biography of George Washington;
  • During 34 years as Chief Justice of the United States, established the authority and prestige of the Supreme Court;
  • Died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 6, 1833,
