- Born in Hanover County, Virginia, April 12, 1777;
- Attended public school; studied law in Richmond, Virginia;
- Admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1797;
- Married Lucretia Hart in 1799; served in the State House of Representatives 1803-1806;
- Senator from Kentucky 1806-1807;
- Served again in the State House of Representatives 1807-1809;
- Again a Senator from Kentucky 1810-1811;
- Representative from Kentucky and Speaker of the House 1811-1814;
- One of the Commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Ghent with Great Britain in 1814;
- Again a Representative from Kentucky 1815-1821 and 1823-1825, and Speaker of the House 1815-1820 and 1823-1825;
- Unsuccessful candidate for the Presidency in 1824;
- Commissioned Secretary of State in President John Quincy Adams' Cabinet March 7, 1825, entered upon his duties the same day, and served until March 3, 1829;
- As Secretary of State, negotiated a number of commercial treaties and sought unsuccessfully to have the United States participate in the Inter-American Congress at Panama in 1826;
- Again a Senator from Kentucky 1831-1842;
- Whig candidate for the Presidency in 1832 and in 1844;
- In retirement 1845-1848;
- Again a Senator from Kentucky 1849-1852;
- Died in Washington, D.C., June 29, 1852.
