- Born in Salisbury, New Hampshire, January 18, 1782;
- Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1801;
- Taught school;
- Admitted to the bar in 1805 and practiced in Boscawen, New Hampshire;
- Moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1807;
- Married Grace Fletcher in 1808, (died 1828);
- Representative from New Hampshire, 1813-1817;
- Moved to Boston in 1816 and soon became known as one of the foremost lawyers and orators of his time;
- Presidential elector in 1820;
- Delegate to the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention of 1820-1821;
- Member of the State House of Representatives in 1822;
- Representative from Massachusetts, 1823-1827;
- Senator from Massachusetts 1827-1841;
- Married Caroline Le Roy in 1829;
- Nominated by the State Legislature for the Presidency in 1836;
- Secretary of State in President Harrison's Cabinet from March 6, 1841, continued in office under President Tyler, and served until May 8, 1843;
- As Secretary of State, negotiated the famous Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 with Great Britain; was again a Senator from Massachusetts from 1845-1850;
- Served as Secretary of State in President Fillmore's Cabinet from July 23, 1850 until his death in Marshfield, Massachusetts, October 24, 1852.
