- Born in Ravenna, Ohio, April 17,1849;
- Graduated from the University of Michigan in 1870;
- Admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced practice in Canton, Ohio;
- Married Mary Elizabeth Schaefer in 1873;
- Judge of the Court of Common Pleas 1886-1890;
- Appointed United States Judge for the Northern District of Ohio in 1889, but because of ill health resigned before taking office;
- Served as Assistant Secretary of State 1897-1898;
- Commissioned Secretary of State in President McKinley's Cabinet April 26, 1898, entered upon his duties April 28, 1898, and served until September 16, 1898;
- As Secretary of State, secured the neutrality of the nations of western Europe in the Spanish-American War and signed the protocol of 1898 for the cessation of hostilities;
- Chairman of the United States Commission that negotiated and signed the treaty of peace of 1898 with Spain;
- Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit 1899-1903;
- Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court 1903-1922;
- Umpire in the Mixed Claims Commission, United States and Germany, 1922-1923;
- Died at his summer home on Mackinac Island. Michigan, July 9, 1923.
