USDA and its higher education partners must play a major role in preparing US citizens to work and succeed in a rapidly changing, and increasingly interconnected world. America needs college graduates with knowledge of foreign agricultural systems and issues. University scientists can solve domestic issues by collaborating with experts worldwide. Multiculturally adept extension personnel can help serve our increasingly diverse communities and respond to the needs of domestic firms seeking business overseas. CSREES supports innovative ways to encourage students, faculty and extension experts to engage globally.

In Focus

• CSREES is participating in a project to revitalize Iraqi agriculture.
• CSREES is supporting two development projects in India, one focusing on agricultural education, another on agricultural marketing.
• CSREES has developed a guide to international programs activities within USDA.

Selected Results and Impacts

• Penn State University professors are using CSREES funding to encourage the European style of large-scale organic waste recycling and composting.
• Using CSREES funds, Tennessee State University is organizing an international conference on agribusiness and food industry in developing countries.
• Virginia Cooperative Extension agents and Virginia Tech faculty are using CSREES funds to study plant disease management in South Africa.
