To Foster Safe and Healthy Workplaces NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Continuing its mission to achieve safe and healthy workplaces for all workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is establishing and extending alliances with two Hispanic work organizations. OSHA is launching a new partnership with New Labor and reaffirming a year-long alliance with the Wind of the Sprit Immigrant Resource Center. The signing ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2004, during a Hispanic-Latino Alliance Conference at Rutgers University's Labor Education Center. The alliances are designed to provide the members of Hispanic labor organizations -- in particular non-English or limited English-speaking employees -- with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help reduce the number of workers killed or injured in work-related accidents. The extension of the alliance between OSHA and Wind of the Sprit is a result of several exceptional achievements. Since June 2003, OSHA and Wind of the Sprit have offered education courses in Morristown, N.J., where more than 125 day-laborers have received instruction in Spanish about safety standards for construction. More than 20 day-laborers have received OSHA's10-hour general industry safety course in Spanish, and several Wind of the Spirit members have completed 'train-the-trainer' courses, qualifying them to teach OSHA's safety courses in Spanish. OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. They provide parties an opportunity to participate in a voluntary cooperative relationship with OSHA for purposes such as training and education outreach and communication and promoting a national dialogue on workplace safety and health.
