OSHA Renews Alliance with Abbott

WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Abbott recently renewed their Alliance to continue efforts to protect the safety and health of employees, small businesses and others in the health care industry. The Alliance will address topics such as emergency preparedness and the value of a workplace safety and health management system.

"Renewing our Alliance with Abbott is another positive step forward, as we continue to ensure safe and healthful workplaces for health care professionals," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "Our continued partnership with Abbott will increase awareness and access to training resources to help prevent workplace hazards."

"Abbott is proud to renew our Alliance with OSHA to improve the safety and health of health care workers throughout the United States," said Robert D. Morrison, divisional vice president, Global Environmental, Health, Safety & Energy, Abbott. "Our collective efforts over the past four years have produced very positive results and we look forward to building on them."

Through the Alliance, originally signed on Sept. 10, 2003, OSHA and Abbott worked in cooperation with Georgetown University McDonough School of Business to develop eight case studies that convey the business value and competitive advantages of an effective safety and health program. Studies related to auto parts manufacturing, global safety and health and occupational exposure limits are found on the Alliance's Web page on OSHA's Web site. In addition, OSHA and Abbott representatives made presentations on the case studies at a number of events including Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business' Center for Business and Public Policy's Seminar "Engaging Tomorrow's Leaders in Safety and Health: The Case Study Approach;" World Safety Congress; Ohio Manufacturing Association; Honda Conference; and the National Safety Council's 2007 Congress & Expo.

Abbott is a global, broad-based health care company devoted to the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of pharmaceuticals and medical products, including nutritionals, devices and diagnostics. The company employs 65,000 people and markets its products in more than 130 countries.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
