U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA recognizes Cargill Meat Solutions in Missouri for safety and health excellence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized Cargill Meat Solutions' division in California, Mo., for an exemplary employee safety and health program.

During a June 12 ceremony at the plant, OSHA designated the division a "star," or highest level, site in its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). Cargill Meat Solutions employs 298 employees who process turkeys.

"Cargill Meat Solutions has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said Charles E. Adkins, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City. "The company's outstanding efforts have included management commitment to safety and health, and employee involvement in safety and health programs."

OSHA's VPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in the VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than others in their respective industries. More than 1,700 work sites representing more than 270 industries nationwide participate in the program.

Information kits about the VPP application and approval processes are available from OSHA's VPP manager at the agency's Kansas City Regional Office, who may be reached at (816) 426 5861.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
