ORLANDO, Fla. -- Floridians who suffered damages from last year's four hurricanes and have questions about state and federal assistance can get answers at 21 Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) in the state. Those who applied to the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) before the February 28 deadline can check on the status of their applications at any DRC.

Florida State Emergency Response Team (SERT) representatives are also in DRCs to help applicants. Representatives of the U. S. Small Business Administration can help people with applications for low-interest loans available to homeowners, business owners and renters.

DRC representatives can also put applicants in touch with agencies providing crisis counseling, assistance to elders (60 and older), attorney services and the Internal Revenue Service.

DRCs operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. DRCs at fixed sites are at the following locations:

The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) is a collaboration of Florida's state agencies led by the state coordinating officer. SERT's mission is to ensure that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them, and mitigate their impacts. Visit www.floridadisaster.org for the latest information on the hurricane relief efforts.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
