4th Annual “SC on the Move” Tour
DeMint to Promote American Energy Freedom on 14 City Tour

August 8, 2008 - Columbia, S.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint announced details of next week’s 4th Annual “South Carolina on the Move” Tour. Senator DeMint will visit 14 cities throughout the state to discuss the need to increase American energy supplies and to recognize standout organizations and individuals who are working to make South Carolina a great place to live.

“The dramatic increases in gas prices and home energy bills are creating real strain for the people of South Carolina, and it’s time that America pursues our own energy supplies,” DeMint said. “For over 30 years, Congress has stopped production of American energy and made us more dependent on foreign oil. It’s time for an all-of-the-above American energy strategy that allows us to pursue offshore drilling for oil and natural gas, oil shale, nuclear energy, hydrogen, wind, solar, geothermal, and other emerging technologies. The first commonsense step to reduce gas prices is to allow the bans on offshore drilling and oil shale to expire at the end of September, making October 1st American Energy Freedom Day.”

On October 1, 2008, the current prohibitions on energy leasing on most of the Outer Continental Shelf and on oil shale leasing on federal lands will expire – unless the Democrat-controlled Congress proactively acts to extend them.

DeMint will also highlight the positive role a number of outstanding businesses have on our state, the improvements made at the Charleston Veterans Hospital and update several local Chambers of Commerce. DeMint added, “I want to take this time to listen to the constituents’ concerns.” Specifically, he will conduct open meetings with constituents and community leaders.

Throughout the week he will present his annual “South Carolina on the Move Award,” to organizations and individuals that have shown exceptional leadership in their community and field of expertise. “I always look forward to August when I get to spend more time back in the state, and I’m particularly excited to continue our annual ‘South Carolina on the Move’ tour for the fourth consecutive year,” said DeMint.

The tour begins on Monday morning in the Midlands and will end in Greenville on Friday, August 15. Throughout the week DeMint will focus his message on Securing America’s Energy Independence. “These high gas prices are damaging South Carolina’s number one industry -- tourism. Our country needs to drill now for our own energy so that we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil and lower gas prices,” DeMint said.
