Ibbotson V; Australasian Society for HIV Medicine. Conference.

Annu Conf Australas Soc HIV Med. 1994 Nov 3-6; 6: 47 (unnumbered abstract).

Department of Microbiology, Royal North Shore Hospital, St. Leonards, Australia.

The risk of health care worker to patient or patient to patient transmission of HIV is possible under certain conditions. There have been well publicised cases implying nosocomial transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C. This paper examines the case of the "Florida dentist" and the "Eastern Sydney surgeon". The paper discusses the patient to patient transmission of Hepatitis C which occurred in a private hospital in Sydney. The investigations which followed the identification of an HIV antibody positive gynaecologist in a Sydney teaching hospital are outlined. Infection Control issues are highlighted. Recent Infection Control guidelines designed to prevent nosocomial transmission of blood borne diseases have aroused controversy. Some of these Infection Control issues remain unresolved. The ramifications of such controversy and unresolved issues are discussed and interventions to further decrease risk of transmission of blood borne diseases are outlined.
