Using the phrase, and, and or search options. Many search pages have options allowing users to choose phrase, and, and or search options

When phrase is selected, the search terms, treated a phrase, are must be contained within the field being searched. The words in the search terms must appear consecutively within the field being searched. When and is selected, all of the search terms must be in the field being searched. When or is selected, at least one of the search terms must be in the field being searched.

For example, consider the three items as potential results of a search for private-sector establishments.

Table I.A.1 Number of private-sector establishments by firm size and selected characteristics

Table I.B.2 Percent of private-sector employees in establishments that offer health insurance by firm size and selected characteristics

Table IV.A.1 National totals for enrollees and cost of hospitalization and physician service health plans for the private sector

If the phrase option were selected, I.A.1 would be the only item returned in the search results, as this is the only one that contains private-sector establishments as a complete phrase. If the and option were selected, I.A.1 and I.B.2 would be returened in the search results since they both contain both private-sector and establishments. IV.A.1 would not be retuned because it does not contain establishments. If the or option were selected, all three items would be returned, since all of them contain at least one of the words in the search terms.

Table number searches. The summary tables searches allow searches on table number. The table number has to be specified using dots to separate to the table number levels (for example III.F.1). The wildcard character, %, may be used—so a search for III.F.% will give all III.F tables and a search for %.A.% will give all National or all State series A tables. When searching for tables, only the table number should be entered in the search text. The word Table should not be included.
