L'on Teisserenc de Bort

L'on Teisserenc de Bort was a French meteorologist who discovered the stratosphere in 1899.

He was born in Paris, France on November 5, 1855 and served in the meteorological department of the French government, becoming chief of the Administrative Centre of National Meteorology in 1892. He left the government in 1896 and established a private observatory near Versailles.

De Bort pioneered the use of unmanned instrumented balloons. He discovered that in the atmospheric zone between 33,000 and 66,000 feet (10,058 and 20,117 meters), the atmospheric temperature remains the same or even increases with increasing height.
