Senate Commerce Committee Approves Anti-Doping Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate Commerce Committee today unanimously approved S. 529, a bill to designate a United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and cosponsored by Committee Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Senator Joe Biden (D-Del.). The bill now awaits consideration by the full Senate.

The bill designates the United States Anti-Doping Agency to: (1) serve as the independent anti-doping organization for the amateur athletic competitions recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee; (2) ensure that athletes participating in such competitions are prevented from using performance-enhancing drugs; (3) implement anti-doping education, research, testing, and adjudication programs to prevent U.S. amateur athletes from using performance-enhancing drugs; and (4) serve as the U.S. representative for coordination with other anti-doping organizations coordinating amateur athletic competitions. The legislation would authorize continued federal funding for the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which is responsible for ensuring that U.S. athletes participating in the Olympics are not using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.
