Shenandoah

The Shenandoah was the first rigid airship built in the United States and the first of the type that was filled with helium gas. It was launched on September 4, 1923. It incorporated zeppelin-type features. It was 680 feet (207 meters) long and had a capacity of 2,115,000 cubic feet (59,890 cubic meters) of helium. Six 300-horsepower (224-kilowatt) Packard engines powered the craft, which had a top speed of 68 miles per hour (109 kilometers per hour). She was completely wrecked in a severe storm on September 3, 1925, while on tour in Ohio, with a loss of 29 lives.
