UVI's Research and Public Service component is the arm of the University principally responsible for defining and solving problems through research and providing quality services that address needs identified by the community. The component's various units include:

  • The Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) conducts basic and applied research to meet the needs of the local agricultural community in increasing production, improving efficiency, developing new enterprises, preserving and propagating germplasm unique to the Virgin Islands, and protecting the natural resource base.
  • The Cooperative Extension Service (CES) delivers programs in the areas of Agriculture & Natural Resources, 4-H, Family and Consumer Science, and Communications, Technology and Distance Education.
  • The Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) - was created in 1999 to bring together marine related disciplines within the University. CMES is composed of the MacLean Marine Science Center, the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service and the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station.
    • MacLean Marine Science Center
    • V.I. Marine Advisory Service
    • Virgin Islands Environmental Resourcs Station
  • The Eastern Caribbean Center (ECC) - includes the Research Institute and the Conservation Data Center. The Research Institute compiles and analyzes demographic, social and economic data, and disseminates this data into various forums and formats. The Institute also conducts scientific surveys to measure the Territory’s population and housing characteristics. The Conservation Data Center compiles, analyzes and disseminates natural resource and socioeconomic data and provides training in GIS (Geographic Information System).
  • The University's Emerging Caribbean Scientist (ECS) programs offer scholarships, research experiences, mentoring and supplemental instruction to St. Thomas and St. Croix students participating in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and psychology courses.
  • The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) Office - mission is to collect, organize, analyze, distribute and present data for planning, decision-making and policy formulation to support the University’s mission.
  • The Research and Technology Park (RTPark) -  Tier-1 global connectivity, jurisdiction under U.S. federal law, corporate tax incentives, and partnerships in workforce and economic development all combine to make the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the University of the Virgin Islands RTPark the ideal place to bring technology-based business for competitive advantage.

  • The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) - promotes the development of the Territory’s science and technology resources. It is designed to increase research and education capacity in science and engineering by training individuals in the areas of science, math, and technology.
  • The Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) - is one of the 54 water resources research institutes established at land-grant universities throughout the United States and its territories. Established in 1973, WRRI conducts research on water resources and related areas, assists in the training of students and water resources professionals and provides information exchange in the area of water resources locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
