Attention and Prevention on AIDS Network - AIDSNet, Mexico City, Mexico

BACKGROUND: Legal constitution as Network with 10 organizations from the civil society -NGO's-, working on attention and prevention, with the objective of strengthening their interventions in society, mainly in the most vulnerable groups that don't have access to the social security services in Mexico City. METHODS: The Network intends to give a better service to people living with HIV/AIDS who are lacking of social security services, and who don't have enough resources to attend themselves and obtain their treatments. Initially, a recap of the resources of each organization was made and we looked for making the services more efficient, avoiding duplicities and overcoming deficiencies in them. The idea is to interchange information about patients with the objective of making the necessary multidisciplinary interventions easier for an integral attention of quality and warmth. RESULTS: Thanks to the constitution as a network, it has been possible to substantially enhance the attention and prevention, by combining the efforts of the constituent organizations, achieving important savings in the edition of materials and avoiding duplicities in the treatments, as well as establishing quality standards in the integral attention of the patients. The network has impeded the illegal commerce of prescription drugs. CONCLUSIONS: In developing countries it is very important for the civil society organizations working on HIV/AIDS to build networks to be able to give an integral medical attention of quality and warmth, as well as wider preventive interventions strategically executed.
