OBJECTIVES: This study describes the association between unplanned readmission rate and volume in breast cancer operation. METHODS: We used Korean national cancer registry data to confirm breast cancer operation cases from 1994 to 1996 and surveyed medical record data of breast cancer patients to confirm accuracy and fill up additional variables through hospitals. After collected these data, we divided breast cancer operation cases into 3 categories by volume and analyzed association between unplanned readmission cases and breast cancer categories using multiple logistic regression methods. RESULTS: Unplanned readmission rate through this study is 1.2 %. After adjusted severity related variables, unplanned readmission rate is significantly higher in low volume cases category than high volume category group. DISCUSSION: This study showed differences in unplanned readmission rate between breast cancer operation cases by hospitals. So, one possible explanation is that unplanned readmission rate is a useful quality indicator for volume-outcome study.
