Karlsson M, Anna-Karin A; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1993 Jun 6-11; 9: 787 (abstract no. PO-D01-3419).

Stockholm County Council Aids Prevention Program, Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: To reach certain target groups in the County of Stockholm with health education on sexuality including HIV/AIDS, STD and abortions. METHOD: The work is directed to four main target groups: Young people, health and medical staff, immigrants and refugees and homo and bisexual men. By using the existing infrastructure we educate and support people who daily come into contact with our target groups. The work is aimed at promoting a positive attitude towards sexuality and personal relationships. The aim is also to get people to talk to each other about sexuality and feelings, and to prepare people for negotiating in safe sex. Our method combines community intervention with information strategies. Since 1987 we have educated about 8,000 people who meet and work with our target groups. For instance teachers, youth leaders, social workers, school nurses, representatives from immigrant organisations, health and medical staff, priests, football coaches and army officers. We provide them with education, skill training, support and all kinds of information material. RESULTS: A long-term process of change and development in the area of sexuality has started in, for example, organisations for immigrants, schools, the army and in the medical sector. A concrete example of this process is that all of the schools for 13-20 year olds receive education in sexuality. By focusing on sexuality, family planning and STD-HIV prevention have been integrated.
