Johne's Disease

Johne's disease is a disease of cattle and small ruminants that has a major economic and animal health impact in the United States and other parts of the world. Mycobacterium paratuberculosis is the bacterium that causes Johne's disease.

CSREES funded a project at the University of Minnesota to sequence and annotate (match genes with possible functions) the genome of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. It has already led to the identification of unique genes that could serve as targets for improved diagnostic procedures.
