I am a South African born gay man living in the United States. I am a psychiatrist working in a New York City Hospital. I was diagnosed with HIV in South Africa fourteen years ago. For many years I kept this secret, to protect my career and my family.I found this to be very difficult. I found the medical profession and the discourses about HIV and AIDS to be alienating and ultimately stressful. I found it important to be able to talk more publicly about my health status. In this talk I will describe the process I have been through in moving from intense secrecy to openness. This has been a complex journey and has involved giving talks such as this one at the American Psychiatric Association annual conference, and at numerous conferences internationally including the keynote address at the February 2000 Narrative Therapy conference in Adelaide Australia. I will describe the impact that being HIV infected has had on my family and my career. I will talk about the politics of sero-discordancy as evidenced in my own community. The presentation will end with an opportunity for people to reflect their responses to the presentation and the ramifications for their own lives.
