Cambridge Biotech Ltd, Galway, Ireland.

A simple 5 minute latex assay has been developed that can be performed on serum, plasma and whole blood. The single reagent is latex coated with two recombinant envelope proteins for detection of HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 antibodies. The latex agglutination is generated on CBC Agglutination slide instead of the rotator traditionally used for latex agglutination assays. The slide can be read visually or read in the battery operated Slide Instrument Assay Reader. The interpretation of agglutination is performed by the Reader thus eliminating the subjectivity of a visually read assay. Pre-clinical data on this over 1,282 (including U.S. and African samples) samples indicates a sensitivity and specificity of greater 99% and 98% respectively. Clinical data will be discussed.
