An approach to address the concens of PLWHA.

Kiwumulo PA; International Conference on AIDS (15th : 2004 : Bangkok, Thailand).

Int Conf AIDS. 2004 Jul 11-16; 15: abstract no. D10236.

Bwanda Community Health Program, Masaka, Uganda

Issues: With much disappointment, the health and social service providers in Bbuye Community noted that many PLWHA were not making use of the services put in place for them as they had expected. Description: In collaboration with 5 AIDS services organizations in the 2 sub-counties, Wabigalo and Malongwe, comprising of 6 parishes each, out of their 1269 registered clients 127 were gender sensitively and randomly sampled. These participated in a survey to find out the possible causes of what they termed as, being unappreciative PLWHA's negative attitudes and PLWHA's own self stigmatizing reactions. In 5 groups each of 10 people, by use of a semi structured interview guide, focus group discussion was conducted. 20 people self administered a questionnaire and the remaining 57 were assisted to fill the same questionnaire. The survey findings showed that for female and male PLWHAs, the underlying factors for the noted reactions were socio-economic and health issues of the PLWHA themselves, their future orphans/dependants and spouses. The paper will focus on how to assist the PLWHAs address their needs and those of their affected families in different geographical locations and cultures. Lessons learned: From these results, incorporation of succession planning, will making, memory book project, Income Generating Activities together with Savings schemes and disclosure was considered of much importance in designing and implementing AIDS programs in addition to other program activities. Recommendations: In order to put in place good AIDS programs targeting PLWHA, involving them to come up with what they consider to be their concerns and identifying with them workable strategies is a promising approach to improve the quality of lives of PLWHA.
