An approach to community involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate designed strategies, the role of community participation, determine the risk factors among the rural population. METHOD: 16 community AIDS workers were trained from a higher prevalence district. Grassroot level training and education was conducted with participants from all aspects of the communities. AIDS information in line with religious and cultural teachings was conducted with the involvement of religious, societal and community leaders and AIDS firm shows as well. RESULT: Six months experimental intervention provided a gradual increase in AIDS awareness, information, condom demand and behaviour change. CONCLUSION: A community based intervention with the involvement of the community and its opinion leaders potentiates community mobilization and promotes voluntary care, support and prevention.
