Int Conf AIDS. 1993 Jun 6-11; 9: 754 (abstract no. PO-C25-3225).

STD and AIDS, PMSP, Guidance and Counseling Centre, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

This Centre has been created with the purpose of guiding, counseling and testing people for AIDS and syphilis. According to a survey carried out from June 1991 to May 1992, 27.3% are female and 72.7% are male. 77.17% of women and 79.38% of men are in the 20-40 years age bracket, 69.4% are single, 18.8% married, 6.6% divorced or legally separated, 1.3% widowers or widows, and 4.1% did not answer. As regards their education, 3.4% are illiterate, 22.3% have not completed primary school, 16.3% have completed primary school, 16.6% have their secondary school incomplete, 18.5% have completed secondary school, 11.9% are university undergraduates, 9.4% are university graduates, and 1.6% did not answer. As regards income, 12.2% earn less that the minimum wage, 30.3% from 1 to 2, 42.9% from 3 to 5, 7% from 6 to 9, and 7% more than 10 minimum wages. We define as seronegative the individuals with at least two negative anti-HIV Elisa tests with a 3-month interval between them; seropositive are the individuals with at least 2 positive anti-HIV Elisa tests made with different blood samples and/or confirmation exam (IFI or WB) TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. (1) of which 1 homo and 1 bi. 15.96% of males and 17.5% of females did not come back to pick up the first result. All studied women were heterosexuals. The data show that this service serves a HIV infection high-risk population, where heterosexuals prevail. The largest sero+ rates were observed with homosexuals and bisexuals, but the rate of sero+ with heterosexuals was also considered high. It is obvious that new strategies must be created to increase the demand of injectable drug users.
