National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH, Bethesda, MD.

While promising new drug therapies for HIV have recently improved the health of many HIV-infected individuals in the United States and elsewhere, control of the epidemic worldwide will require the development of an effective anti-HIV vaccine. Development of such a vaccine for HIV requires new approaches and techniques because of the particular challenges posed by the unique characteristics of the virus. In addition, there are vaccine issues particular to women, such as the need for protection from vaginal mucosal exposure to HIV and the access of women, the population most vulnerable to HIV worldwide, to vaccine programs. Progress toward the development of a vaccine and issues particular to women will be discussed.
