NOTICE OF LIMITED COMPETITION REQUEST FOR COMPETITIVE APPLICATIONS: INTERNATIONAL CENTERS FOR RESEARCH ON COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (ICRC) RELEASE DATE: August 5, 2004 NOTICE: NOT-AT-04-008 National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (http://nccam.nih.gov/) The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is requesting competitive applications from the current awardees of “Planning Grants for International Centers for Research on CAM (PICRC).” This request initiates the second of two phases in NCCAM’s international centers program. Under the first phase, a total of 11 awards were made (ten by NCCAM, and one by the National Cancer Institute) to support the organization and planning required to develop a complex, international, multidisciplinary, multi-site research program consisting of three synergistic, exploratory/developmental research projects and an administrative core supporting the center. As described in the original PICRC RFA, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AT-03-002.html, eligibility to apply for the second phase is limited to these 11 institutions. The ICRC initiative will provide support for one or more international centers to: o Establish programs of rigorous, high quality research on CAM/Traditional Medicine(TM) practices at their sites of origin and determine whether these practices are beneficial to health and well being in addressing high priority local and global health problems; o Support the development of the scientific and administrative talent and research capacity needed to carry out such investigation; o Facilitate and encourage international CAM research collaborations, and exchange of scientific and clinical methodologies between CAM/TM and biomedical researchers and practitioners; and o Contribute to the preservation of systems of traditional and indigenous knowledge. NCCAM will contact current PICRC awardees directly regarding ICRC application procedures and format.
