BACKGROUND: Despite the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance in gonococci all over southeast Asia, surveillance for such resistance is limited in Indonesia. OBJECTIVE: To determine antimicrobial susceptibilities of a total of 298 N. gonorrhoeae isolates from cohorts of female commercial sex workers in Bandung and Jakarta.METHODS: MICs of antimicrobials were determined by agar dilution according to NCCLS. Typing of the Tet M plasmid in tetracycline-resistant isolates (TRNG) was performed by PCR.RESULTS: [table: see text]CONCLUSIONS: All gonococci were resistant to penicillin and 99.3% to tetracycline: all these showed plasmid mediated resistance to tetracycline (TRNG); chromosomal resistance (MIC 2-8) was not observed. All TRNG typed showed a PCR fragment characteristic for the "Dutch" type Tet M plasmid. Chromosomal resistance to thiamphenicol (MIC >/= 2) was significantly higher in Jakarta than in Bandung (p < 0.01). Spectinomycin, fluorquinolones and azithromycin are still useful primary drugs for treatment of gonococcal infections in Indonesia.
