LIEBERMAN ACCEPTS HOMELAND SECURITY COMMITTEE CHAIRMANSHIP DESIGNATION

Senator Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., Tuesday gladly accepted the decision of the Democratic Steering Committee to elevate him to the position of Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The Steering Committee decision is expected to be approved by the Democratic caucus and the full Senate at later dates.

The Senator issued the following statement after the Steering Committee decision.

“I am honored to be selected by my peers to take over the Chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and I look forward to receiving the approval of the Democratic caucus and the full Senate.

“I served as Committee Chairman for 18 months in 2001 and 2002, during which time I helped establish the Department of Homeland Security to bring coordinated effort to the job of preventing, preparing for, and responding to disasters, including terrorist attacks. Therefore, it will be my first priority as the newly elected Chairman to oversee the Department, to guide it into maturity, to be its best friend and sharpest critic so that it performs the service it was designed for, which is the improved safety and security of the American people.

“Chairman Collins and I have enjoyed an excellent relationship and have worked across party lines to pass significant legislation. I expect to continue working in a bipartisan relationship with her and the rest of my colleagues on the committee to further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the federal government.”
