Legislative Drafting: Translating Ideas into Bills and Amendments at All Stages of the Legislative Process

September 23 - October 23, 2008
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, Tue & Thu
Instructor: Warren BurkeWashington, DC$295

Overview:
This course teaches the skill of legislative drafting, with a focus on hands-on researching and drafting. We begin with an overview of the legislative process, learning how a bill becomes a law. Students then learn how to research legislation and how to prepare bills and amendments for introduction, committee proceedings, floor proceedings and conferences. Course sessions include discussion of important political and parliamentary considerations.

Because legislative drafting, like many things in life, is best learned by doing, students complete drafting assignments which are then critiqued by the instructor.
