Objective
To provide the student the opportunity to expand their understanding of reading and pronouncing Arabic script and to continue increasing their conversational skills and knowledge of Middle Eastern culture.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to engage in conversations involving themselves and their immediate surrounds; expand their knowledge of Arabic script to include sentences and paragraphs and to gain a better understanding of Middle Eastern culture.
Instruction
Major topics covered in the course will include
- nisba;
- word order and gender agreement;
- the idafa structure;
- demonstrative nouns;
- negating the present tense verb;
- vocative particle;
- cardinal numbers 1 - 100;
- forming dual nouns;
- number-noun agreement;
- plurals of non-rational nouns;
- objects of verbs and prepositions;
- present tense negation and conjugation;
- expressing degree;
- the imperative;
- doubly transitive verbs;
- expressing possession;
- attached pronouns suffixed to verbs;
- plural of nouns and adverbials.
Vocabulary will include topics such as
- education;
- expressing admiration;
- question words;
- describing situations;
- family;
- Arabic last names;
- expressing regret or apology;
- expressing a lack of knowledge;
- Arabic print media;
- daily activities;
- food and drink;
- and requesting and declining things politely.
Methods of instruction include lectures, discussions, classroom exercises, audio/video material, role-play, quizzes, a mid-term examination and final examination.
