Hematologic correlates of HTLV-I seroconversion.

Changes in hematologic parameters during early HTLV-I infection may reveal clues important to disease pathogenesis. HTLV-I pre-transfusion negative recipients were followed at monthly intervals post-transfusion (PT) for one year and yearly thereafter. Serial blood counts were performed on 50 unexposed, 27 seroconverters (SC), and 45 nonconverters (NC) from the Jamaica Transfusion Study. Hematologic Parameters-Mean Totals: (table: see text). A significant increase in abnormal lymphs (p=.045) and monocytes (p=.003) was observed at 3-5 and 6-8 mos. PT, respectively, and a persistent decline in eosinophils among SC was also observed. One SC developed TSP/HAM at 32 mos. PT and had an elevated WBC (16.1) with decline in lymphs (2254) at time of diagnosis and symptom onset. These early intermittent hematologic differences are probably related to primary HTLV-I infection and may be predictive of later development of disease.
