Hematology kits: technology and applications.

ARC has developed unique flight hardware for two hematology experiments on board STS-58 as part of the Spacelab Life Sciences-2 mission. Changes in blood volume and hematological responses to microgravity will be measured in flight using the rat as a model to humans. Various components will support collection of biological specimens during the 14 day mission. These components are placed into 128 modular kits for 16 different types of activities. Experiment functional objectives are (1) to determine the red blood cell production/destruction, (2) to collect/process blood and other tissue samples, (3) to determine the hematological responses to Erythropoietin, (4) and to store/return biological specimens at various temperatures. The kit design provides containment while protecting the delicate equipment against breakage and leakage. These multi-functional kits are crew/investigator "friendly" using an enhanced labeling system and a simplified procedural flow. The modularized structure provides maximum efficiency in the 0-g environment validated aboard a KC-135 flight. The flexibility of kit design allows for changing the experiment components thereby minimizing the cost and effort required for development. This technology can be transferred and applied to many other areas of space life sciences research and utilized by users aboard other space vehicles such as Space Station Freedom and MIR.
