Crain's Honors Young Engineer

Aerospace Engineer Lizalyn Smith was honored at Crain's Cleveland Business's second annual 20 in Their 20s event, which recognizes people in their 20s who are making an impact on Northeast Ohio.

Smith joined Glenn's staff after earning her master's degree in engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 2004. Today, she has a role in developing a simulated upper-stage for NASA's new Ares I rocket, which will eventually carry astronauts to the moon.

Smith was not only recognized for her contributions to engineering but also for her community involvement. As president of the Northeast Ohio chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, she networks with society members, facilitates meetings, establishes community programs and fosters relationships with corporations and other technical organizations. Smith also serves as a facilitator in the Footprints for Girls program, which provides role models for at-risk students.

She encourages other young professionals to participate in community organizations as well. "The earlier you start and the longer you serve, the greater the impact you can make," she said. "So get involved as soon as possible."
