An update on issues important to
Idaho, the West, and our Nation
from U.S. Senator Larry Craig

Bringing our budget
Back to Black

Americans' hard work and entrepreneurial spirit have given us the largest and most vibrant economy in the world. Our economy is triple the size of Japan's, which runs a distant second, and it is growing at record rates over the past three years. This unprecedented growth has led to record highs in the stock market, 7.4 million new jobs, and a 10 percent increase in after-tax personal income.

Unfortunately, spending at the federal level, if left unchanged, is poised to undo Americans' hard work. By the year 2050, federal spending will consume fifty percent of our economy, which translates, in tax dollars, to a tax increase of 60 percent, or an additional $11,000 per household. This increase in spending is largely attributed to the growth of mandatory entitlement spending, such as Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. The status quo is unacceptable. Fiscal responsibility no longer means fiscal restraint; it also now includes budget reform.

That's why I am holding a series of town hall meetings in Idaho this week to discuss problems related to our national budget and the solutions I'm proposing to change course. This week I will be in Southern Idaho, and meetings will be held in North Idaho later this spring. Full details are available on my website at http://craig.senate.gov/budget or by calling my local office.

I urge Americans to join with me in calling on Congress to put fiscal responsibility into law — and to make the tough choices necessary to safeguard our future and that of our children.

When I was in Boise recently I spoke at the Idaho Farm Bureau's Young Farmer and Rancher Leadership Conference about the importance of agriculture in Idaho. Read more about this current event.

Clarity Needed

Many Idahoans, including myself, have expressed a great deal of concern about the two Border Patrol Agents who have been imprisoned for violating rules and laws governing Border Patrol policies and procedures when they shot an apparent drug smuggler in Texas. That's what has led me to write a letter to the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee (PDF, 75KB) to further review this matter. You can also listen to my remarks (MP3, 1.1MB).
