NIH Business Intelligence (nVision Data Warehouse)

In 2002, CIT began working on a new data warehousing system to update and modernize the legacy NIH Data Warehouse and to provide comprehensive reporting solutions for NIH enterprise transaction systems, including the NIH Business system (NBS). nVision is the new data warehousing system and is accessible via the NIH Portal. nVision offers a wide spectrum of reports and tools critical to the diverse management needs of the NIH administrative and budget communities located in the 27 NIH Institutes and Centers, and in offices of the Office of the Director, NIH.

nVision is composed of existing and developing business areas. The nVision new development component is phased through FY 2012 and is driven by the release of each, new, respective NBS source system.

Travel, nVision’s initial release, corresponded to the release of the NBS Travel Manager function in September 2003.

Technology Transfer, the second release of nVision followed in August 2004.

Two new nVision business area tools, unrelated to NBS, were developed and deployed in 2004 and 2005. They are the Commercial Activities Tracking System – Inventory (CATS-I) and Calling Cards & Audio and Conferencing. These business area tools were created as a direct result of meeting with the NIH community and converting their business intelligence needs into information retrieval strategies that support short and long-term NIH business intelligence goals.

The Supply and Replenishment business area of nVision was released in February 2007, and coincided with the deployment of the NBS’ Supply Management system.

nVision deployed the Acquisitions & Contracts and Property reporting areas on July 5, 2007; after the June release of NBS Wave 2 (Tracks 3 and 4).

Effective April 2, 2007, the NIH Data Town interface was retired and conjoined with the nVision interface to create a single, central website — the nVision Data Warehouse Portal. Data Warehouse business areas and reporting tools, such as Budget and Finance, Human Resources, Research Contracts and Grants, Staff Training and Development, Budget Tracking, Manager’s Desktop Assistant, and Workforce Planning Trends that were previously housed on Data Town were co-located with the nVision business areas to form the new nVision Data Warehouse portal page.
