Covington is a global leader in life sciences. With 160 lawyers worldwide, our Life Sciences Industry Group, which includes food and drug and environmental law practices, is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The firm's environmental practice includes advice and representation in regulatory and legislative matters, litigation, and transactional work throughout the United States and Europe. We frequently serve as specialist advisors or advocates on specific projects presenting novel and complex issues, often of national and international importance.

We provide EC and pan-European environmental legal advice to chemical manufacturers and downstream users, such as manufacturers of medical devices, cosmetics, biocides, electronic and mechanical equipment, vehicles, paper, and aircraft. Our lawyers and policy analysts come from different EU Member States and cover the languages of many European jurisdictions.

The Brussels office has been active on the EC REACH Regulation right from its early draft proposals. It has advised associations of chemical manufacturers and downstream users by guiding them through the REACH legislative process and providing legal comments to the proposal. We now provide legal and strategic advice to companies helping them interpret the REACH rules and developing REACH compliance programs.

We also provide advice on EC and pan-European waste legislation issues and in particular we advise a large number of leading electronic manufacturers on the Directives on Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and the Restrictions on the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) and their national implementation.

Together with our Washington DC, office, we also provide advice on the rules and policies on climate change. We are deeply involved in issues relating to the negotiations of the post-2012 climate change regime under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the review of the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme, and other EU climate change initiatives.
