January 2008 Weather in Review
January 2008 weather was influenced by fast moving weather systems
and cold fronts that brought dry conditions to the area,
more day to day fluctuations between warm and cold, and
several windy days. January 2008 had less than half of the usual rain
for January, continuing the trend of dry weather that started in
September 2007. Although it was dry, January 2008 did not make the
top 10 driest Januarys.
See List of the Driest Januarys.
On average, January is usually the driest
month of all 12 for most locations in South Central Texas, except for
the extreme east part of the area, where February, July or August turn
out to be the driest month based on long term averages.
Last year in January, South Central Texas had a much wetter
than usual January.
See Rainfall for January 2007.
Like the last half of December 2007, several strong cold fronts
moved through the area, bringing windy days, with wind gusts
between 40 and 60 mph.
Dust with strong northwest winds swept across the area in the
afternoon of the 29th and again on the 31st.

In the last year a big contrast of rainfall has occurred from
very wet to very dry.
January to August of 2007 was the wettest first 8 months of
any year for San Antonio from 1871 to 2007 and for Austin Bergstrom
from 1943 to 2007. At Austin Mabry from 1856 to 2007 and Del Rio
from 1906 to 2007, it was the 3rd wettest January to August.
At Austin and San Antonio, the reverse occured from September 2007
through January 2008.
As the ongoing drought continues across South Central Texas,
September 2007 through January 2008 was the 2nd driest
September to January for San Antonio since 1871;
the 4th driest at Austin Bergstrom since 1949;
and the 26th driest for Austin Mabry since 1856.
September 2007 to January 2008 was the 45th driest period for
Del Rio from September to January.
