August 2008 Weather in Review
The increasing trend for more rain and showers that began in
early July continued through August 2008. The contrast between
more rain near the Rio Grande to less rain over the east and
northeast part of the area was vast, given the generous amounts of
rain that fell across the west part of South Central Texas
the 23rd and 29th. Del Rio had the
wettest month since having 20.93 inches in August 1998,
with 11.23 inches of rain in August 2008. San Antonio picked up 4.98
inches of rain, the wettest month since August 2007. To the
east rainfall at Austin varied from slightly above
average to slightly below average for August.
Austin Mabry had 2.39 inches of rain, only 0.08
inches above average, while Austin Bergstrom had
2.16 inches, 0.35 inches below average.
From June to August, less rain fell over the
northern hill country to parts of Central Texas,
including the Austin Area. Even though the heat of
summer peaked in most places in June, it moderated
only slightly in the Austin and surrounding areas
due to less rain and showers. As a result, June
through August 2008 tied with June to August of 1998
for the warmest June to August at the
Austin City Climate location,
Austin Mabry.
