April 2008 Weather in Review
In April of 2008, the distribution of rainfall shifted further east and north,
compared to March of 2008. Rainfall was much below normal from
the Edwards Plateau to the Rio Grande Plains and east to San
Antonio. Over the eastern part of South Central Texas greater
rainfall amounts showed up. Austin Bergstrom and Austin Mabry
ended the month with rainfall above the April average. Several
strong cold fronts moved across South Central Texas in April
of 2008. The warming trends that followed and proceeded these
cold fronts pushed the average April temperature to above normal
at most locations; however, the highest temperatures during
these warming trends did not exceed the highest readings observed
in March.

Even though April 2008 had several strong cold fronts sweep across the region,
the warming trends between these frontal passages made the
month overall warmer than usual at most locations.
In April 2008
the cold outbreaks brought several clear and cold nights.
The dryness since the fall also contributed to the
cooler overnight lows.
The coldest lows came on April 13th and 14th, when lows fell
into the 30s across the hill country to
the 40s over the rest of South Central Texas.
In the predawn
hours of Monday April 14th, pockets of low temperatures at
and below freezing were observed along and north of a Junction
to Kerrville to Austin Bergstrom line.
In the late part of the month, a strong cold front for late April came
April 27th, leaving a few record
daily lows on the 28th and 29th, when lows fell to the 30s
across parts of the hill country to the 40s elsewhere.
Even though the warming trends in between
the cold fronts came quickly and persisted for several days,
the warmest days of April 2008 did not exceed the warmest
days in March.
Like many Aprils, several severe weather events came mostly
from the north and northwest, associated with cold fronts, although one event
on the 23rd came from thunderstorms that formed west of
the Rio Grande and moved east over the southern part
of Maverick County. Rainfall for the month was overall
drier area wide than in March, and shifted to the north and
east.
See rainfall maps for
March and April 2008.
The rainfall from January to April was the
4th driest first 4 months of any year at Del Rio, and
the 9th driest at San Antonio. At Austin, more rains
have come so far this year, where the momentum for rain
making energy has had more time to develop along cold
fronts since the fall. This trend continued in April,
as the monthly rainfall for April 2008 was slightly better
than the average at Austin. Further west the rainfall
coverage decreased markedly, falling to less than a tenth
of an inch near the Rio Grande. Del Rio had the 5th driest
April of record with only 0.06 inches of rain.
The list below shows the driest January to Aprils at
Del Rio and San Antonio.
