Agricultural Animal Genomics Blueprint

A USDA-University Task Force, under the joint national program leadership of CSREES and Agricultural Research Service, has produced a Blueprint for USDA Efforts in Agricultural Animal Genomics. This strategic plan outlines a 10-year plan (2008–2017), for research, education, and extension in agricultural animal genomics. The planning effort involved a significant stakeholder workshop sponsored and conducted by the two agencies in 2006, and also reflects a synthesis of needs and recommendations arising from several conferences, symposia, workshops, and working groups over the past several years.

Discovery and application of basic science to improve animal production systems is the overarching goal of ongoing and future USDA conducted and sponsored animal genomics programs. The blueprint provides specific priorities and recommendations for genomics “infrastructure, discovery science, and science to practice.”

CSREES intends for this document to guide and facilitate future budget development, resource allocation, implementation, and coordination of research, teaching, and extension programs by federal and university scientists, and educators.
