Advice on Completing the Application Form

Your application makes the case for you as a potential intern in our office. For that reason, it should be thorough and accurate, and it should adequately reflect your accomplishments, your interests, and what you hope to gain from such a position.

Don't wait until the last minute to send in the application, especially for the summer. Too much can go wrong, and an application coming at the last minute doesn't get the benefit of a thorough review.

Try to keep your application as free from error as possible. We will look past the occasional typo or grammatical misstep, but persistent errors will make a poor impression.

Have someone else review your application before you submit it. Ask someone whose opinion you trust and who you know will give you an honest evaluation, like a professor. Have your reviewer pay close attention to your essays and writing sample. Have you answered the questions asked of you? Are your ideas sound?

Remember, although someone else may review the application, the submitted copy must be your own original work.

If you are using the online form to apply, treat it with as much seriousness of purpose as you would if you were sending in a printed application. The online form provides a convenient and quick way for you to return your application to us, but you should resist any temptations to believe that ``quick" means ``less important." We suggest completing the answers in a word processor offline, then cutting and pasting them into the online form when you are ready. That lets you use some of the features of a wordprocessor, like spell check, that the form doesn't provide.

Stick to work or academic related experience. When answering the essay questions or pointing out things in your resume, be sure to stick to skills and experiences you think would be relevant to the position itself, such as your ability to organize projects or your writing prowess.

Do not send photographs of yourself with the application. We will ask for a photo that we can use on our Intern Bulletin Board if you are accepted, but we do not want them as part of the application.
