DOLE APPLAUDS SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE APPROVAL OF NORTH CAROLINA NOMINEES
|
|
April 14th, 2005 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole today applauded the Senate Judiciary Committee for its approval of North Carolina district court nominees Jim Dever and Bob Conrad.
“I applaud the approval of these nominees by the Committee. The Senate should now move forward with their confirmation. North Carolina has had the longest district court vacancy in the country, and the Judicial Conference has even considered it a judicial emergency.
“Raleigh, the State’s Capital and the District’s largest city, is without a resident District Judge. Elevating Judge Dever to the Eastern District Court will end this problem. Judge Dever is an extraordinary attorney who I know will rule with fairness.
“Bob Conrad is sorely needed for the Western District of North Carolina. Bob is well known for his prosecution of a cigarette smuggling ring funding the terrorist group Hezbollah, and he headed the U.S. Justice Department’s investigation into campaign fundraising abuses.
“Both Judge Dever and Mr. Conrad have impeccable credentials and are held in high esteem by Republicans and Democrats. The Senate has the responsibility to provide advice and consent on judicial nominations. This is a tradition we have had for more than 200 years. It has been my privilege to give these North Carolina nominees my strong support.”
