Homeland Security
Ever since the attack on our own soil on September 11, 2001, our government has been working to bolster our safety and security here at home. Congress created the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate prevention and response efforts among our government and passed the U.S.A. PATRIOT Act to ensure that we remain aware of potential threats to our security. In 2004, Congress reorganized the intelligence community, placing counterterrorism at the center of its efforts.
The Department of Homeland Security works continually to help local communities respond to terrorist threats. It provides cities and towns with federal grants to strengthen and prepare first responders like police and firefighters, as they are on the front lines of our communities. We must continue to provide the Department of Homeland Security with the necessary resources to protect us from terrorist attacks, so that no community remains vulnerable in the face of any threat.
I am a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, which oversees our nation's air, land, and sea infrastructure, the Coast Guard, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, all of which are key components of our homeland security efforts. I also serve on the Committee on Agriculture, where I work to protect our food supply from bioterrorism. During the 110th Congress, my colleagues and I will work to better understand the vulnerabilities we face and do all we can to further secure our homeland.
The war on terrorism is far from over, and we must all work together to protect ourselves. If you have any thoughts or ideas on how to make our nation safer and more secure, please do not hesitate to let me know.
