EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION UPDATE (EUC) - December 12, 2008

Congress has enacted legislation expanding the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Program by adding an additional seven (7) weeks of EUC benefits to the original 13 weeks of EUC benefits. In Maryland, a total of twenty (20) weeks of EUC benefits will now be payable to eligible individuals.

Letters are being mailed beginning December 12, 2008, to individuals who have exhausted their initial 13 weeks of EUC benefits. The letter contains instructions on how and when to file your claim.

Individuals who are currently receiving EUC benefits are also being sent a letter notifying them of the additional weeks and directing them to continue filing for EUC benefits if they continue to be unemployed.

If you are currently receiving regular benefits, you will receive a letter after you have received your 26 weeks of benefits. The letter will contain instructions for filing for these EUC benefits. Anyone who quits a job to file for these benefits will be denied.

Unemployment insurance provides benefits to persons who are unemployed through no fault of their own and who are ready, willing and able to work, and actively seeking work.

Unlike some other government assistance programs, unemployment insurance is just that - insurance.  No deduction is made or has been taken from a worker's paycheck to pay unemployment insurance benefits. The entire amount is paid for by the employers covered by the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Law. An unemployed worker who files a claim for unemployment insurance benefits is a claimant. E-mail Unemployment Insurance for more information.
