Domestic Working Group Grant Accountability Project

Domestic Working Group Grant Accountability Project logo Guide to Opportunities for Improving
Grant Accountability

This "Guide to Opportunities for Improving Grant Accountability" is designed to provide government executives at the Federal, State, and local levels with specific ideas for better managing grants. This guide was compiled through a project under the U.S. Comptroller General's Domestic Working Group under the leadership of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Inspector General.

The intent of this guide is to share specific innovative approaches taken by various agencies to manage grants, so that others can consider using those practices. In 2006, the Federal Government budgeted about $450 billion in grants for improvements in such areas as healthcare, road construction, drinking water facilities, and environmental protection. It is important to ensure that these funds are spent properly and achieve the desired results. The 50 promising practices in this guide are examples of how specific agencies implemented each practice. Links to the complete guide, various key sections of the report, and frequently asked questions are provided.
