1- Where does Congressman Dingell live?
My wife Deborah and I live in a Dearborn, Michigan townhouse near the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus. When I am working in Washington, we stay in a townhouse in Northern Virginia.
2- You are currently the longest serving House Member and second longest serving ever? When do you become the longest serving and who do you pass?
Jamie Whitten of Mississippi is the longest serving Member of the House in history and I could pass him on February 14, 2009. That is if the Good Lord, the people of Michigan's 15th District and my wife, the lovely Deborah Dingell let me - and its not necessarily in that order.
3- What does the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee do?
Chairmen have ability to schedule hearings, hire Committee staff and allocate the Committee budget. The Committee on Energy and Commerce is considered an exclusive Committee (along with Ways and Means, Appropriations, Financial Services and Rules) and has one of the largest issue portfolios of any House Committee. Currently, myself and the 56 other Members of the Committee work on legislation and oversight in several areas, including: air quality, energy, telecommunications, trade, Medicare and Medicaid, consumer protection, and hazardous materials.
4- What communities are in Michigan's 15th District?
Most of eastern Washtenaw County, including Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti; all of Monroe County and parts of Downriver and the Western portion of Wayne County, including Flat Rock, Romulus, part of Dearborn Heights and part of the City of Dearborn. Click here to see a map of the district.
5- How many votes have you cast since coming to Congress?
That's a tough number to keep tabs on, but my office did check on that around the time of my 50th anniversary. As of October 20, 2005, I had cast 21,875 roll call votes in the House Chamber.
6- I am traveling to Washington and would like to know how to get a tour of the Capitol. What other tours are available?
Information about the tours my office can arrange for you are on my website. Click here for more information.
7- I don't have a group of 10, can I still tour the White House?
You may submit a request for a tour of the White House even if you have a group smaller than ten people. Congressional offices often work together to create groups of ten with their respective constituencies. Keep in mind, White House tours book-up quickly and therefore, it is prudent to request your tours three to six months in advance. In order to expedite the process, please provide my Washington D.C. Office with the following for everyone in your party: First Name, Last Name, Middle Initial; social security number; date of birth; whether you are a U.S. citizen; and your passport number if you are not a citizen.
8- Can I get a flag flown over the Capitol?
Yes you can and my office can help. Click here for information on flags.
