1. Winthrop is named after Governor John Winthrop, a Puritan lawyer, who was a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and its first Governor.
2. Winthrop is the birthplace of author, lecturer and historian, Edward Rowe Snow, who spent most of his life studying the lighthouses, islands, and legends of the New England coast. Mr. Snow has been credited with over 100 books and pamphlets as well as newspaper articles, lectures, and tours of the area.
3. Sylvia Plath, the famous American poet resided in Winthrop.
