MECS Definitions of Fuel Use

Total Energy Consumed as Fuel: All energy used for heat, power, and electricity generation, regardless of where the energy was produced (energy which is consumed for nonfuel purposes is not included).  Included in total energy consumed as a fuel is net electricity which is defined as:  the sum of quantities of electricity that are :

  1. purchased;
  2. transferred in; and
  3. generated from noncombustible renewable resources;
  4. minus quantities of electricity that are :
  5. sold; and
  6. transferred out.

Not included are electricity inputs from onsite cogeneration, nor generation from combustible fuels, because that energy has already been included as generating fuel (coal, for example).
